A single-elimination tournament (also called a knockout, sudden death, or Olympic system tournament) is a competition format where the loser of each match is immediately eliminated. Each victory advances the winner to the next round until only one champion remains.
Because half the remaining competitors are eliminated in each round, single elimination is the fastest and most time-efficient tournament format available.
When the number of participants is not an exact power of two (4, 8, 16, 32, 64), byes must be allocated. Event Bracket automatically rounds up to the next power of two and balances byes across top and bottom brackets so top-seeded players receive deserved advantages.
Compare tournament rounds and total matches required for common participant counts:
| Teams / Players | Total Rounds | Total Matches | Consolation Match? | Direct Generator |

For N participants, there are always exactly N - 1 matches played (or N if a 3rd-place consolation match is included). For example, 16 teams require 15 matches.
