A double-elimination tournament is divided into two connected trees: the Winners Bracket and the Losers Bracket (Consolation Bracket). All competitors begin in the Winners Bracket.
In single elimination, a top contender who has an off game or faces the #1 seed early is instantly out. Double elimination gives players a second chance to fight through the consolation bracket and claim the championship.
A double elimination tournament requires approximately twice as many matches as single elimination:
| Participants | Minimum Matches | Maximum Matches (with If-Necessary Final) | Estimated Duration | Quick Launch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 Teams | 6 matches | 7 matches | Half Day | Build 4-Team |
| 8 Teams | 14 matches | 15 matches | 1 Day | Build 8-Team |
| 16 Teams | 30 matches | 31 matches | 1 - 2 Days | Build 16-Team |
| 32 Teams | 62 matches | 63 matches | 2 - 3 Days | Build 32-Team |
Because the tournament is double elimination, the Winners Bracket finalist enters the final with zero losses. If the Losers Bracket champion wins the first final game, the undefeated finalist now has only one loss, requiring a deciding rematch (the "if-necessary" secondary final) to determine the true winner.
Our algorithm automatically flips and distributes losers across opposing sides of the consolation bracket so competitors who played in round 1 avoid rematches until late in the tournament.
